What is Human Trafficking?
Human trafficking is the illegal trade of people for labor or sexual purposes using force, fraud, and/or coercion. Trafficking affects both foreign nationals and citizens, occurs locally and internationally, and is closely linked to other forms of gender-based violence (GBV) such as domestic and sexual violence, both of which are used by traffickers to manipulate and control victims. Addressing human trafficking requires tackling GBV as a root cause. Womankind’s Project Free works with survivors to provide safety, access to services, and a pathway to self-sufficiency, using a human rights-based approach that centers their diverse experiences. “The very label of ‘human trafficking’ itself prevents some people from seeking help. They are unclear about what trafficking means, or they don't want to be labeled as a survivor. One of the best things I've seen advocates do is provide individualized support to survivors, who make their own choices and begin the path to healing. We’ve seen many of them do amazing things.”
